Nathaniel sleeps through the night!
Nathaniel just had another "first": last night he slept through the night! Previously, he has had a couple stretches of 5-6 hours of continuous sleep, but last night he slept for nearly 9 hours straight. This might have something to do with the fact that Nathaniel has been battling his first ear infection for the last several days, and his appetite has been suppressed... Hunger is the usual reason why he wakes up during the night. At any rate, Mom enjoyed her first night of uninterrupted sleep since last September!

Nathaniel, can you hear me? Yes!
The night after Nathaniel was born, the Labor and Delivery nurses at Liberty Hospital performed a state-mandated newborn hearing screening. Nathaniel's left ear passed the test, but his right ear failed. So, the following night, the test was repeated, and his right ear passed, but his left ear failed. These latter results were reported to the Missouri Department of Health, which referred us to a pediatric audiologist for more in-depth diagnostic testing.
So, bright and early New Year's Eve morning, the 3 of us went to Children's Mercy Hospital for an Auditory Brainstem Response test. Nathaniel slept through the test, which is exactly what the audiologist needed for an accurate result. The bottom line is that Nathaniel passed the test in both ears with flying colors -- not a surprise, but certainly a relief!

Christmas 2008 recap
Now that we're a week into 2009, I've finally found the time to recap the Heider family 2008 Christmas.
Sunday, Dec. 21, the 3 of us drove from Liberty to Streator. Driving conditions were not the best -- it was very windy and cold, and the roads were icy. Yet, we only stopped once to fill the gas tank and our bellies. It was dark when we arrived in Streator, but we could see some tree limbs on the ground from the ice storm that hit two days earlier. The following morning I ventured outside with Grandpa Heider to take photos of the ice storm's remnants.
I had only 2 items on my Christmas list, and I was fortunate to receive both of them: the Canon PowerShot SX10 IS digital camera, and the Epson Perfection V500 Photo scanner. Hopefully both of these items will improve the quality of the photos and videos that I post to this blog!
Friday, Dec. 26, the 3 of us drove from Streator to Elrosa. Again, driving conditions were less than ideal -- it was rainy and very foggy in places. Again, we only stopped once to fill the gas tank and our bellies.
Sunday, Dec. 28, all of the Heinzes except Jim, Shelly, and Mariah gathered at Grandma and Grandpa's house to celebrate Christmas. Nathaniel received many more toys, about as many as from the Heiders.
Monday, Dec. 29, Nathaniel visited the Heinze farm for the first time. The weather was too cold to go to the barn to see the critters -- that will have to wait until the next visit.
Tuesday, Dec. 30, the 3 of us drove the 3rd and final leg from Elrosa to Liberty. Driving conditions were horrible for the Minnesota portion of this leg -- a heavy snowstorm limited our speed to 40 mph through the state. Fortunately, we left the snow behind us as we crossed the state line from Minnesota to Iowa. Once again, we only stopped once to fill the gas tank and our bellies. It was good to return home!

Nathaniel meets Santa
Ann and Nathaniel joined Dad downtown at Crown Center last evening to hear the Hallmark band play Christmas music, shop in the employee card shops, and meet Santa. Nathaniel nearly missed seeing Santa due to an ill-timed diaper blowout (Nathaniel's, not Santa's), but we were able to chat with St. Nick for a few minutes. Nathaniel is still to young to be afraid of Santa, so we were able to get a decent photo of them. He is also too young to ask for gifts, but Santa said that he knows what Nathaniel wants for Christmas: "something to suck on"... What a wise old elf!
